House Explosion - Chestnut Street, Bridgeville (5/3/2003)

At around 4:22pm, an explosion rocked a residence on Chestnut Street in Bridgeville. Bridgeville Station 117, Fairview Station 268, Upper St. Clair Station 284, and Southbridge EMS were on the initial dispatch. Bower Hill Station 255 and Greentree Station 163 were later requested. The fire was reported under control at 5:30pm. One firefighter was treated at the scene for minor injuries but was released back to duty. The Fire Marshall was on scene to investigate.

As most of the fire units were returning to their stations, at 7:56pm, Bridgeville's Fire Chief and investigators from the Allegheny County Fire Marshal's Office were nearly knocked off their feet by another explosion and subsequent fire. All previous stations were requested back to the scene with the addition of South Fayette Station 266 and Scott Township EMS. Three burn victims were taken to the hospital, one by medical helicopter. Glendale Station 257, Presto Station 125 and Oakridge Station 269 also assisted. A three-block radius from the explosions was evacuated and the Mayor of Bridgeville declared a state of emergency. Equitable Gas crews were investigating.
