Explosion - Chestnut Street, Bridgeville (5/3/2003)
At around 4:22pm, an explosion rocked a residence
on Chestnut Street in Bridgeville. Bridgeville Station 117, Fairview Station
268, Upper St. Clair Station 284, and Southbridge EMS were on the initial dispatch.
Bower Hill Station 255 and Greentree Station 163 were later requested. The fire
was reported under control at 5:30pm. One firefighter was treated at the scene
for minor injuries but was released back to duty. The Fire Marshall was on scene
to investigate.
As most of the fire units were returning to their
stations, at 7:56pm, Bridgeville's Fire Chief and investigators from the Allegheny
County Fire Marshal's Office were nearly knocked off their feet by another explosion
and subsequent fire. All previous stations were requested back to the scene with
the addition of South Fayette Station 266 and Scott Township EMS. Three burn
victims were taken to the hospital, one by medical helicopter. Glendale Station
257, Presto Station 125 and Oakridge Station 269 also assisted. A three-block
radius from the explosions was evacuated and the Mayor of Bridgeville declared
a state of emergency. Equitable Gas crews were investigating.
