Industrial Fire - Moon Township
(6/9/2003)
Moon Township Station 197 was dispatched at 5:51pm along with
Valley EMS to the Buckeye Pipeline Facility on Narrows Run Road after an employee
reported a fire in the research building. The employee advised dispatch that
the building was located near a large propane tank as well as the fuel pumping
station for the entire facility, which was shut off by another employee just
before firefighters arrived.. The fire was quickly extinguished with special
care taken to protect exposures. A major disaster was averted since the fuel
pumping station near the fire building is the station that feeds the tank farm
consisting several 4-million gallon storage tanks. The pumping station also controls
the system that feeds the jet fuel to Pittsburgh International Airport. Allegheny
County Fire Marshal is investigating but the cause appears to be accidental.
