Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire units were dispatched to the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church on Wylie Avenue in the Hill District section of the city for smoke in the structure at around 8:30am. Firefighters found a working fire in the structure and began battling the blaze that eventually went to 4 alarms.

Several firefighters were injured early in the blaze when a backdraft occurred, blowing the firefighters into the street. Crews made significant progress and were beginning to douse hot spots when the five-story bell tower collapsed. A total of 31 firefighters were injured. Firefighter Richard Stefanakis and Battalion Chief Charles Brace were unable to escape the collapse.

EMS and Rescue crews from the outlying suburbs were called in to assist. The Pennsylvania Urban Search and Resuce "Strike Team" was requested for the rescue effort.
