03/21/2004 - Edgewood 1 car MVA

Parkway East near Edgewood Exit

We received the call from one of our police officers on duty. He was on patrol and saw a couple of kids leaning up against the chain link fence that overlooks the Parkway. He stopped to ask what they were doing and they replied that they were watching a crash. He jumped out and found what appeared to be 4 vehicles blocking the inbound (west) lanes. He notified me and we responded. Upon arrival we found 4 vehicles one with heavy front and rear damage, one with minor front end damage and another with rear damage. The fourth one had no damage but stuck around for PSP. The driver of the heavy damaged vehicle was complaining of minor aches and pains. We called in EAPS for medical transport. There was a lot of fluids and debris on the roadway. The Trooper wrote 33 citations for drivers that were driving down the breakdown lane. It took him extra time in responding because people were driving down the berm. It took us a couple of extra minutes ourselves, we had 2 drivers pull out in front of us. We waited for the tow truck and we cleared the debris. We were on scene for 51 min.
