10/15/2005 - Braddock - Multiple
Structure Fires
Downtown Braddock
Oct 15, 2005 10:51 pm US/Eastern
Braddock (KDKA) Flames
swept through about eight buildings in downtown Braddock this afternoon.
Dozens of firemen from 25 different departments responded to the massive blaze
in the heart of downtown Braddock.
Authorities say they think the fire started when a torch sparked flames in a
building being demolished.
"When the wind picked up on a lot of the embers, they flew out and started to
land on a multiple number of the buildings in the business district," said Bob
Full of Allegheny County Emergency Management.
Witnesses say high winds carried flames from one vacant building to another.
The House of God church, located nearby, had to be evacuated.
"When we got out there was smoke, the commotion of the fire trucks, the water
spraying, as well as heavy thick smoke. The immediate fire was right next to
the House of God," said Levi Walker, an apostle at the church.
Although many of the buildings were set for demolition, this was a sight no one
wanted to see.
"I'm sure for the council members, the police departments and the residents of
Braddock this is a devastating blow," said Ella Jones, Braddock Business Manager.
