05/24/2006 - South Fayette - Motor Vehicle Accident

Union Avenue Extension

11:02 pm - The Oakdale Hose Company (Station 215) and Oakridge VFD (Station 269) were dispatched for a car accident on Union Ave Extension in South Fayette. The Driver who was under the influence of alcohol was driving his SUV down the Union Ave Extension when he lost control hit a guard rail then immediately broke off a fire hydrant, while dragging the fire hydrant he continued for roughly 120 feet when he grazed a telephone pole. Then hit a full size van, a SUV and a car that was parked side by side in a driveway and taking a few garbage cans with him. When he hit the van he caused a chain reaction which pushed the 3rd car on to a 4th car that was parked in front of the garage. Rescue 215, and QRS 215 arrived on scene with police. After 215 EMT's did a quick assessment with the patient, the local police handcuffed the intoxicated driver and put him in a waiting ambulance. Engine 215-1 then arrived on scene, cut power to the SUV. 215 command asked dispatch to call the water authority to fix the broken hydrant that was now flowing water down another drive way. Also notified was the power company about the cracked pole. Station 269 personnel closed down both ends of the road and set up extra lighting to clean up the scene. All units were released after the water authority, power company arrived on scene, and the 4 cars towed away at 12:44.
