:: Donora Technical Rescue - 2/13/04

Police approached 2 male actors exiting a "known drug house" in Donora. Upon placing the suspects into the police vehicle and transporting them to the station, the police officer opened the door to let him out of the car. One male, whom was NOT handcuffed because he was NOT UNDER ARREST at the time, ran from the police car across the street approximately 400 yards. It was extremely dark and the police began a foot pursuit. Officers from approximately 13 local departments came to assist. The Fire Department was called for standby to place our rescue boat in the river to check the river bank, however due to extreme water levels, we were unable to launch our vessel. However, we did bring to the scene our Bullard Thermal Imaging Camera and searched the area with nothing found. Upon discussing the issue of calling of the search by PD, we heard someone yelling for help over the 35 foot hillside. What happened was, that the police thought he was traveling northbound in the open area, so we searched with the camera from the point that he ran going northbound, however the suspect in fact was approximately 50 yards SOUTHBOUND, therefore the TIC did not pick up body heat. However, once the suspect was located, he was hanging onto a tree dangling above the Mon River. I rappelled down to comfort the victim while our local Rescue Team (Mon Valley EMS TEAM 570) was notified to respond. I controlled the victim and reassured him that help was on the way, and checked to make sure that he wasn't hurt anywhere. He said he was just COLD. The foot pursuit began at 02:13 hours and the patient was extricated from the hillside at 05:28 hours.
