Allegheny County to consider giving firefighters perks

By Justin Vellucci
TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Two Allegheny County lawmakers want to buy volunteer firefighters a round. Or at least pay for a dip.

The members of Allegheny County Council today are expected to introduce legislation that would waive certain county park fees for those who charge into burning buildings for free. All they would have to do is apply for a county-issued ID to gain free access to the golf courses at North and South parks, ski slopes and county pools, among other amenities, said Councilman Nick Futules, D-Verona.

"It's a 'thank you' for people who work without pay," said Futules, who cosponsored the legislation with Councilman Bob Macey, a fellow Democrat and West Mifflin firefighter.

"I just think it is a great opportunity to show our firefighters that we appreciate what they do," Macey said.
Supporters said the measure would help fire companies with recruitment while providing an incentive for those who might want to join a local department.

"It's definitely a step in the right direction," said David Nickel, a Swissvale firefighter.

"We've been trying to recruit guys and this will help," said Gary Keane, a Churchill firefighter

Futules downplayed any negative impact the measure might have on admission and sales revenues.

"The cost would be minimal," he said. "It's a drop in the bucket, as far as I'm concerned."

Council President Rich Fitzgerald said he wants more specifics about the plan.

"In general ... it makes sense," said Fitzgerald, D-Squirrel Hill. "We have to look at the fiscal note, like anything else, (and ask) 'What will the cost be?'"

An 18-hole round of golf -- which costs $5 to $18, depending on the season -- would be one of the fees waived, Futules said. So would the cost of skiing, where individual slope rates at Boyce Park fall between $4 and $9, or swimming in county pools, which costs $1 to $4. Each fire company would get one free picnic rental each year under the program, Futules said.

Jeffrey Kelly, an operations supervisor Ross/West View Emergency Medical Services Authority, hopes the measure could include all emergency responders who are volunteers.

"If you're going to make a statement like that, it should be both EMS and firefighters," Kelly said.

Futules said he wants to waive fees for firefighters as a means of introducing a program that eventually could open up to more emergency responders.

That sentiment resonated with Monroeville police Chief George Polnar.

"If it's done across the board, I think it would be great," Polnar said.

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A girl was injured early Monday when a school bus and a tractor-trailer collided in Hempfield Township.

Police said the bus was on its way to Stanton Elementary School when the driver crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer before smashing into a guardrail along Route 119.

Two students, both of whom were deaf, were on the bus at the time of the crash.

"In a traumatic situation, it was easy to pick up on what they were trying to tell us," said Chief Bob Coletta of the Youngwood Fire Department. "They were very well versed on how to communicate with us."

The girl injured in the crash is expected to be OK. The bus driver suffered minor injuries, police said. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The accident is being investigated.

Investigators Search for Fatal Fire's Cause

Investigators in Harborcreek want to know what started a deadly Sunday night housefire. It happened around 10pm Sunday at a home Lowry Road in Harborcreek. East County fire control sent 8 fire departments to the scene. The 2 1/2 story wood frame house was heavily involved in fire when the first units arrived. Crews were then notified that someone was trapped on the second floor of the home. The flames were so hot, crews weren't able to get inside the home to save a woman who was trapped inside. The victim's husband was also in the home when the fire broke out, but he was able to escape. It took firefighters nearly an hour to control. Fire officials confirm that one person inside the home died in the fire. Volunteers from Wesleyville, Belle Valley, Lawrence Park, Crescent Hose and Emergycare assisted.

Two Bradford Area Students Die in Fiery Crash

Bradford Township Police and State Police are trying to piece together the details of a tragic accident Friday night near the Marilla Reservoir, which claimed the life of two Bradford Area High School Students. Two cars travelling east on West Washington Street both crashed. One car, driven by 18 year old Evan Yehl, ran off the south berm, hit a number of trees and burst into flames. Yehl and passenger, Britt Bookhammer were killed. A third teen in the car was seriously hurt. The victim is under treatment at Hamot Medical Center in Erie. An autopsy conducted at the Erie County Morgue on Sunday helped to make a positive identification of the victims. The second car involved in the accident, hit guardrails on the south side of the road, crossed back over both lanes, hit an embankment and crashed into a ditch. Three local teens in that car were taken to Bradford Regional Medical Center for treatment. A State Police accident reconstruction team from Erie, is assisting in the investigation. The funeral for Evan Yehl is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bradford. No word yet on funeral plans for Britt Bookhammer.

Well, after reinstalling the forums, and manually checking many files, the boards are back up. The arcade unfortunately did not make it, and is going to need reinstalled, thus losing all the scores and records.

I will be working on restoring the arcade in the next few days. I will also be working on updating the site, as there are many submissions that have been sitting waiting to be uploads.

Thanks for the support and all the offers of help.
