Body found in ruins of Fayette County home

January 30, 2009 by FF184 · Leave a Comment

An autopsy is set on a badly burned body found in a Fayette County home hours after a fire was extinguished there.

Masontown Police Chief Joseph Ryan says the body was found only after the son of the woman who lives in the home inquired about her after the fire.

A state police fire marshal is investigating. The house caught fire about 6 a.m. yesterday and collapsed.

The county coroner says the autopsy will be today. The body was too badly burned to even determine its gender.

Ryan says investigators believe the body was found in the kitchen, because it was near some appliances. But the ruins were so collapsed even that is unclear.

17 Fire Companies Fight Bowling Alley Fire

January 24, 2009 by FF184 · Leave a Comment

UNION TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Seventeen fire companies responded to a persistent blaze at a Lawrence County bowling alley and restaurant.

Rescue officials said no injuries have been reported at the Parkstown Lounge & Restaurant in Union Township in Lawrence County. Fire companies fought the fire since before noon on Saturday, and it took them hours to gain control of the fire.

Fire authorities said they believe the fire may have started in a hooded fan above a stove in the restaurant’s kitchen. Patrons of the restaurant and bowling alley escaped unharmed.

“We rushed out (and the fire department) were here within 10 minutes,” said Richard Bardash, who has owned the facility for 28 years.

Fire companies from throughout Lawrence County and from as far away as Poland and Springfield, Ohio, responded helping to put out the blaze. Firefighters rushed in water to the scene from Erie.

“When the chief got on scene, he said there was smoke showing from the lounge area at the Parkstown Lounge & Restaurant bowling alley. When he went inside, he found fire in the kitchen. The fire spread through the lounge; however, it has been stopped at the bowling alley,” said Patrick Angiolelli, president of the Union Township Fire Department.

Bardash said he was relieved the situation didn’t turn out worse.

“We were pretty confident at that point that they were going to be able to put the fire out and, as time went by, the fire continued to spread. We felt maybe the lounge and the kitchen were a loss, but ultimately, they told us that the whole complex is gone,” he said.

Bardash added, “I think the fire department, all of them, have just done a tremendous job and there’s nothing they could do. It was beyond their capability and everybody has just been so great. Thank God that there was no loss of life.”

The 20-lane bowling alley is about 55 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Crews battle industrial fire on the North Side

January 24, 2009 by FF184 · Leave a Comment

By The Tribune-Review

Fire officials say a four-alarm warehouse fire in the Woods Run area of the North Side was declared under control just after midnight this morning.

No injuries were reported.

Sgt. Amanda Aldridge of the Pittsburgh Fire Department says the fire started at about 9:30 p.m. Friday in a building where steel plates are made in an industrial building on Doerr Street, near the State Correctional Institution.

Aldridge said there were no evacuations because of the blaze.

Onlookers were kept at a distance because Pittsburgh firefighters were told that there are a variety of chemicals stored in the building.

State Department of Environmental Protection officials were notified that run-off water from the fire could flow into the Ohio River.
