Fire Rescue Headlines: Carnegie Medal, East Liberty Fire, River Rescue Prevention

July 2, 2009 by FF184

Here are your western PA Fire Rescue news headlines for Thursday, July 3rd, 2009.

  • Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire crews extinguished a fire in the East Liberty section of the city last night around 2 am.  The residents tried to extinguish the fire with a garden hose prior to units arriving. [WPXI]
  • A truck crashed causing traffic delays on I-79 near Mt Nebo road this morning. [Post-Gazette]
  • Nice timely article about the Versailles/McKeesport area and lack of resources for kids to learn how to swim.  Since there have been so many river rescue situations this year already, they are trying to think of ideas on how to prevent more from happening.  I like the proactive idea of teaching how to swim, instead of trying to prevent people from going in the river.  Like they said, you’d have to build a fence 100 feet tall the whole way down the river to keep people out of the river. On a side note, as a person living near White Oak, I fully agree with the person complaining about the cost to get into White Oak pool at $8 for non-resident children and $10 for adults.  That my friends is highway robbery just to get into a swimming pool. [Post-Gazette]
  • Finally, resident Dwight Moore from Aliquippa, received a Carnegie Medal of Heroism for saving his neighbor from a fire in May, 2008. [Beaver County Times]
