Happy New Year - Hoopie World Update, in Western Pa Fire News – WPAFN

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all the Hoopies out there.  Sorry its been a while since anything has been added to the site.  Things got busy and just snowballed from there during the late fall, and time was just not available to put towards the site.  I thought I’d give a little update on things.

First, lets do a quick year in review.  The site started slow last year and got rolling again.  At the peak, the site hit an Alexa ranking of around 374,000 in September.  For those of you unfamiliar with Alexa rankings, it is a site that ranks websites for popularity.  The 374,000 indicated that Hoopie World was the 374,000th most popular site in the whole world, which isn’t too bad if you compare that to other firefighting related sites.  We are currently around 600,000, which is expected due to the lack of updates to the site.

Hoopie World is also now on Facebook and has a Twitter account.  Spread the word to your Facebook friends to become a fan and we’ll see how many we can get.  The Twitter account allows us to “Tweet” our news stories and updates to those who follow us on Twitter.

The forums aren’t like they used to, however I don’t think any firefighting forums are like they used to be.  Most have dropped in participation, and some have dropped off the radar completely.  At the time of this writing, we have 1422 registered members of our forums and 44,807 posts.

Looking ahead, I am planning on changing the front section of the site again, to eliminate some clutter.  I made some good progress last year with the department profiles, and plan on focusing more attention on that area again.  I already have a volunteer to help with that project and plan to get rolling on updating and adding more departments soon.  For those of you who haven’t checked them out yet, follow this link and be sure to provide any updates or information you may have for your department.  The goal is to have the most complete department profiles on the web for western Pa fire departments.

Also, if you have department photographers or someone else who takes pictures for you incidents, please have them send a few our way for the site.  User contributions are almost non-existent at this point and I would really like to find some new contributors, as well as get the old ones take pictures again.  This goes for present and past incident pictures.

I also have a history section in the works for the site, however its not close to be ready for public viewing yet, so stay tuned for that in the upcoming months.

Thanks for the continued support as we approach Hoopie World’s 7th birthday in February, and here’s to a happy and safe 2010.
